Building a solid foundation is fundamental to my teaching philosophy. I believe students should be given essential and technical tools that would enable them to fully express themselves musically. Lessons are generally structured, yet there is always room for flexibility and attention in certain areas. I recognize the uniqueness in each student, thus I strive to meet each student's individual needs. Ultimately, making music should be fun and enjoyable. I believe that patience, encouragement, creative challenges, and practice tips are important to keep the student motivated at lessons and at home.
As versatility is also vital to my teaching, a solid foundation includes exploring a variety of musical styles - classical, modern and popular. Ear training and music theory are integrated during the lessons, as it is important that students develop a critical ear and understanding of the music (theory) in order to evaluate and assess themselves during practice. Without being given the proper practice techniques, progress is hindered. After all, students spend most of their time away from the teacher. The ultimate goal of my teaching is to develop musicians who are not only well-rounded and well-equipped, but are able to teach themselves and others.
Methods and Levels
I teach all levels from the very beginning to performing artist level. I am as comfortable teaching 5-year-olds as I am teaching adults of all ages. My methods of teaching are as various as my studio's demographics. In general, for young beginners, the preferred method is "Piano Town" to get them started. Generally after Level Two, they are ready to transition to the Royal Conservatory Method's "Celebration Series" books that range from preparatory level to advanced. For teenaged and adult beginners, the preferred method is "Alfred's Basic Adult Piano Course". Methods are used simply as guides and are not generally strictly followed. Other sources to complement the methods are used as well.
Opportunities
As a member of the Music Teachers Association, there are opportunities for students to perform in front of judges, peers and the general audience. These opportunities teach students proper performance etiquette. Rewards are given in the form of certificates, ribbons and trophies. Competitions, Festivals, Auditions and Assessments come with a fee. The fee depends on the type of event. Although the student is encouraged to participate in the events, I do not make it a requirement. I leave the decision to participate up to the parents and/or the student.
